I want to learn screen printing and want to start a home business, how do I go about it?

April 14th, 2010

I mean, what kind of equipment will I need? How much about screen printing should I know?

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you’ll inevitably have as well as many you haven’t anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* The Complete Book of Silk Screen Printing Production by J. I. Biegeleisen
* How to Print T-Shirts for Fun and Profit! by Scott O. Fresener
* Screenprinting: The Complete Water-Based System by Robert Adam, Carol Robertson, Thames, Hudson
* How to Start and Manage a printing Business: A Practical Way to Start Your Own Business by Jerre G. Lewis, Leslie D. Renn
* Screen Printing by Sam Hoff

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

How do I print front and back(double sided) in printing center?

April 12th, 2010

When I google how to print double sided, everyone says <just print it and put the paper back in the printer and print again blah blah blah>, however, I can’t do this in printing center, because there might be someone waiting while I am puting paper in and out of that big printer. Do I have to ask the empoyer? Or does the printer in printing center have some special function?

Have you asked nicely?

Really expensive printers have the functionality you want. Have you tried asking the people who work at this place if their printers can do double-sided print jobs?

The cheaper alternative is to print all-odd-pages first, then swap them round in the printer – this is how most people do it [using cheaper printers].

How do you take plastic printing off a polyester shirt?

April 10th, 2010

I have a soccer jersey (made with polyester) that has some old, fading plastic printing on it, what kind of chemical solution/ liquid can I use to scrub it away?

Thanks.

Use an iron and either greasy proof paper or a brown paper bag, put the paper over the plastic and run a warm iron over it a few times this will lift it off

How do I print to a Konica 7145 copier with network printing?

April 4th, 2010

Hi, we recently got a Konica 7145 copier that has network printing capabilities and supports IPP. We have a small P2P network. I have tried repeatedly to get it to print over the network without success.

I can ping the copier’s IP just fine. I am able to access the web utility so I know that I can connect to the copier via TCP/IP. IPP is enabled. Any ideas are appreciated!
Richard, I downloaded both PCL and PostScript drivers from the Konica/Minolta website. I have tried both drivers on mulitple workstations. I have tried printing using both LPR and sending raw data via TCP ports 9100, 5500, and 10001. I have tried printing to the spooler and directly. Everything has failed so far.
UPDATE: I just added a second network printer to the network and had no problems setting it up. The other printer is a Brother MFC-8460N. The Konica still does nothing. If I press the "printer" button on the Konica copier, on the LCD screen it says "Ready to Print" and underneath it says "Network Initializing." Thanks everyone!

Hi, Your best bet is use the PCL driver if you dont know if you have postscript installed. Open the printer properties, click the "PORTS" tab, click "ADD PORT", double click "STANDARD TCP/IP".New window opens, then click "NEXT", enter IP address of the copier, click "NEXT", on next page ignore everything and click "NEXT" again, click "FINISH" window will close and you will see the small "PRINTER PORTS" window again, click"CLOSE", click "CONFIGURE PORT", in the PROTOCOL box click"LPR"in the "LPR SETTINGS" the "QUEUE NAME" is "PORT1", also click the "LPR BYTE COUNTING" box, then click "OK" window will close, on original properties window click "APPLY". You should be ready to print now.

How to hide text when printing in excel?

April 2nd, 2010

I would like to give my customers a copy of the balance they owe, I have a default templete I fill out. I would like it to only print out the amounts, names, date ect. But it prints everything out!! How can I select certain areas to print and hide the rest of the text from printing?

As long as you are not giving them a copy of your actual spreadsheet (the workbook with the worksheet template), then all you really need do is use the CTRL key as you select all of the cells you really want to print.

Then from the Menu (or MS-Office button) choose PRINT. When the dialog window appears, choose the option for SELECTION under the PRINT WHAT section. Then click OK to print just those cells.

What types of printing equipment prints magazines?

March 29th, 2010

I’m starting a mazaine in a couple of months and am wondering what equipment I would need to do this. Would it be more economical to take my savings and get my own printing press that prints magazines or just pay someone every month to do it?

Thanks!

I will tell you one thing, magazines are printed on a web which is cheaper, faster, more economical than buying the web printer which sells in the millions. The cost to print a magazine is around 50 to 75 cents each when printing in volume.

The printing, assembling, sorting , collation is all done on the same press and takes about 1 minute per book.

Here is what a web offset printing machine looks like and you can imagine the cost from there.
